Ch 2.1 – Chemistry for Biology

This chapter covers the basics of chemistry, with special attention to the different forms taken by Carbon.

  • Print the Reading Guide if you don’t already have a hard copy and fill it out as you read and watch the following videos. Turn it in on Canvas.

  • Read Chapter 2.1 in Freeman.

  • Learn about the structure of atoms, covalent and ionic bonds, and why some compounds are bonded ionically whereas others are held together with covalent bonds.

  • Learn about the diverse structures carbon makes.

Chapter 2.2-2.5 – Water and life

This chapter deals with emergent properties of water. Remember that emergent properties are features that ‘emerge’ at higher levels of organization. In the case of water, the unique combination of hydrogen and oxygen, and the polar nature of the covalent bonds leads interesting properties of water.
